Prayer
A Prayer for the Victims of Flood
In Psalm 46, we read these words of encouragement and comfort:
"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."
Almighty God, Creator and preserver of our world. We ask you to hear our humble prayers for all those affected by the devastating floodwaters throughout Australia at present.
We pray for all threatened by floodwaters in city, coastal & rural areas. Grant safety to the thousands of residents under evacuation orders. In your mercy, bring relief to affected areas and protect both life and property.
We pray for the sick, the injured and the homeless. Have compassion on those who grieve the loss of loved ones. In the midst of suffering, comfort men, women and children according to their needs.
Give courage and hope in the midst of despair. Through the generosity of governments and individuals, provide a future for those whose present circumstances are marked by loss and desperation. Grant wisdom to those who assist, especially government leaders, our State Emergency Service, our Australian Defence Force, other emergency workers and aid agencies. And by your gracious hand, rebuild communities where men, women and children are nurtured with care and love.
Amen

Principal's Message
It’s most definitely celebration time of year! Friday night saw our Class of 2022 gather together with their parents and carers and MRC staff to celebrate not only the end of exams and learning competencies but also the end of their time as students of Mercy Regional College. We were joined by former student Lester Powling (Class of 2006) who shared his journey from MRC to his current employment as Development Manager at Development Victoria working on medium density building projects such as the new Commonwealth Games athletes’ villages around regional Victoria whilst completing his MBA at University of Melbourne (read Lester's story later in this newsletter). Lester encouraged our young people to get out there and ‘connect the dots’ of their futures. It was a fantastic night of celebration for these resilient young people and their families. We wish them all the very best for their many futures.
Our first 'Up the Creek' canoeing and camping experience was held last week with the second group heading off yesterday. Our Year 8 students and the staff supporting them were definitely challenged as they connected with themselves, their peers and with the environment in their most enjoyable five day canoeing expedition. Free from all technology with time to meander peacefully down the Glenelg River before spending each night under the stars, the week away was one they will always remember. We are grateful to the staff who gave their time to ensure our Year 8 young people were able to access such a brilliant learning experience.
We congratulate our MRC Clay Target Shooting Team who were presented with an Australian Government Sport Achievement Award by Dan Tehan MP last week. We also commend staff member Cam Beaton for his contribution to community sport recognised at the same event. We also congratulate our Year 8 Boys Cricket team who participated in the SSV State Quarterfinals in Geelong last week. The boys were only beaten by count back on the number of sixes hit after drawing their match. We are very proud of their achievement.
It was fantastic to see the Noorat Show back after two years of not being held. Noorat was busy on Saturday as the community from near and far flocked to what is known as a brilliant experience. Hopefully most people were able to enjoy the day before the rain fell and the wind blew! Thank you to all families and staff who helped out on our car raffle stall. It is being drawn next week at our Mass of Thanksgiving on the afternoon of Wednesday 30 November. Make sure you grab your tickets at https://cutt.ly/car-22 for an opportunity to win one of the many amazing prizes. Noorat will this weekend host part of the Great Victorian Bike Ride on Sunday evening.
Our School Advisory Council held its last meeting of the year last week. I thank all members for their ongoing support and advice. We congratulate and thank Shane West on taking on the role of School Advisory Council Chair and thank outgoing Chair Julie Finney for her hard work and support whilst in this role. New SAC members are always welcomed. We meet six times a year. If you would like to join our SAC please contact me at principal@mercy.vic.edu.au. At our SAC meeting we discussed the progress of Stage 1 of our Building Program which was due to begin at our O’Keeffe Campus at the beginning of Term 4. Unfortunately, we have experienced major delays in relation to both the replacement of our septic tank as required in our building permit and the refurbishment of the toilets due to the current pressures in the building market. Whilst we are very disappointed that there has been very little progress we understand the pressures everyone is facing. I will keep you updated on progress when things change. Whilst bringing all students together on one campus for the term was to enable the O’Keeffe Campus to be vacant for the build, we have seen many silver linings that we can celebrate. We plan for our 2023 Year 7 & 8 students and staff to begin the 2023 school year at the O’Keeffe Campus.
With the State election only days away, it may be helpful to know both major political parties have promised future support for Catholic schools. The Labor Party has promised $717 million, while $700 million in capital funding is promised by the Victorian Liberals and Nationals. Both packages enable new facilities and schools to be constructed and upgrades to existing buildings to meet changing educational needs. It is strong recognition of the vital part Catholic education plays in the State of Victoria. Please view the following letter from the Catholic Education Commission for the full announcement.
Next weekend is the beginning of the new liturgical year starting with the season of Advent. The Advent season begins four Sundays before Christmas and is a time of preparation for our hearts and minds for the anniversary of Jesus’ birth on Christmas. This season is intended to renew our joy, hope, faith and love. Many families celebrate Advent with a wreath and lighting candles each week, beginning with the purple candles of hope and faith, the pink candle of joy and the final purple candle of peace. The use of the wreath and candles during Advent is a longstanding Catholic tradition that was originally adopted by Christians in the Middle Ages as part of their spiritual preparation for Christmas. As part of our MRC Christmas tradition, our students and staff are giving generously to support the local Vinnies Christmas Giving Appeal. Camperdown Rotary Club are seeking donations of used and no longer needed hearing aides as well as used stamps. If you have either of these items please send them into Reception for collection and we will pass them on to Rotary. Stamps can be left on letters and cut around.
Finally, we invite all MRC community members, friends and family to come along to our 2022 Art and Technology Exhibition being hosted at the Terang Courthouse this weekend. Opening night is Friday night with the exhibition open on both Saturday and Sunday between 10.00am and 2.00pm.
We will have one final Newsletter this year in Week 10 to share with our community the Year 7 to 11 Award winners for 2022, 2023 Junior and Middle Years Student Leaders and to farewell and give thanks to those staff who are finishing their time at Mercy Regional College at the end of 2022.
With kindness

Learning at MRC
The Importance of Finishing Well
The end of the academic year is upon us and this is a timely reminder to all of our families and young people on ending the year well. Ending the year well looks like this:
- Attendance and completion of all examinations
- Submission of all assessment tasks
- Attendance at all end of year community events
- Exercising self-control in terms of behaviour
It is easy as the holidays approach for young people to lose focus and ‘check out’ early. Please encourage your young person to see their school year out positively - ask them about their exams and assessments and if you are unsure of what is expected please reach out to teachers. Please push back against requests for days off because ‘We only have….’ or ‘We aren’t doing any work’. This is never the case, our students are being kept engaged in learning right up until the last day of school. 1 December is an early finish time and provides students with two months of holidays so every day between now and then still counts.
Booklists for 2023
The 2023 Booklists are now live and ready to purchase. Our supplier is Campion Books.

Junior Debating
MRC's Junior debaters final round was delayed due to illness however it has been rescheduled as a virtual event with Geelong Grammar School arguing the negative in 'that we should cap the salaries of professional sportspeople.' Opening statements begin at 5.30pm on Thursday at the John Tindley Resource Centre at the McAuley Campus, Camperdown.
Middle School Oratory Competition
The annual MRC Oratory Competition is back in its original face-to-face format!
In the afternoon of 10 November, six Middle school students spoke passionately in front of their peers, teachers, parents and a panel of invited judges - Maureen O’Loughlan, Lachie Lee and Colin Hayman. All participants were brilliant in their speeches and posed a really hard choice for the judges.
Congratulations to Veronica from Year 10 on claiming victory with her speech on “Graffiti should be considered Art”. Well done also to Rose from Year 9 on receiving a Highly Commended award for a convincing presentation on “Influencers on social media create a positive impact”.
We now look forwards to the Junior school competition that has been postponed until the last week of school.
Year 8 Drones
A STEAM class is even more fun when you get to fly a drone!
This term, our Year 8 students have been learning about drone laws, the underlying physics principles that allow a drone to fly and the programming language called Block Programming. All this knowledge was put into action when the students were presented with a series of challenges requiring them to program their drone to follow a specific sequence of manoeuvres. We saw some impressive drone take offs, landings, hovering and even flips!
Year 8 PEAK Footy Clinic
A group of our Year 8s from the PEAK elective ran a footy skills clinic for the students of St Patrick's School Camperdown earlier this term. The clinic included a drills session and a supervised game.
The Grade 3s and 4s had a wonderful time and were excited to receive a footy as a gift. The footies were kindly donated by Essendon Football Club after the PEAK team had contacted with the plan for their project.
Well done, Year 8s! What a great way to share your passion for footy with the younger ones.
Schultz Organic Dairy Excursion
On Thursday 17 November a group of Year 10 Agricultural Studies students ventured to the Schultz Organic Dairy farm just outside of Timboon. The group were shown across the premises with owner Simon who has been working on the property for 19 years. The aim of the excursion was to explore a combination of farming and marketing practices that make the organisation one of the biggest local employers in the region. Simon spoke to the students about the ways in which a farm can vertically integrate other processes on the land to diversify their business to make it more sustainable. Other conversations that occurred in the dairy included conventional and organic farming methods. These were contrasted with reference to herd size and management of inorganic inputs and how this all works on their land.
At the end of the tour the participants were lucky enough to receive a tasting board of some of the artisan cheese products made on site including fresh milk, feta and quark, aside freshly made savory biscuits. Simon and Jess explained how important it is for their business to listen to customers to see what matters most to them. One example of this is the use of recycled milk bottles at particular venues where customers return glass bottles to refill fresh milk and reduce the amount of plastic waste. We thank Simon and Jess for the opportunity to visit their business and to leave with some delicious treats.
'Ice Cream Creation' Workshop No. 2
Our hard working Hospitality and Year 11 VCAL students completed their second session of the 'Ice Cream Creation' Workshop. Now that they have decided on their delicious recipe, the group have extended their flavour experimentation to include:
- Lemon Myrtle
- Lime Sorbet
- River Mint Choc Chip
- Mint with Chocolate Ganache
- Salted Caramel Chunky Macadamia
- Saltbush Caramel
- Chunky Salted Caramel
Now the lucky tasting team made of selected staff members and students will have the pleasure of tasting and choosing their favourites for us to continue to develop.
How can ice cream get better? With biscuits! Our learners also baked a range of biscuits to make some extraordinary ice cream sandwiches.
- Nutella
- Chocolate
- Chocolate Swirl
- Chocolate Chip
- Macadamia
- Salted Caramel
- Indigenous Anzac
Which would you like to try? Look out for the next chance to taste their ice cream creations!

Community & Wellbeing at MRC
Remembrance Day & Catherine McAuley Remembrance Day
At around 11am on Friday 11 November, our College community assembled to mark Remembrance Day. Led by Ms Kellie Wilson and our 2023 College Captains Jack and Eloise, students and staff reflected on the sacrifices made by those before us and were encouraged to recognise our responsibilities as citizens of the world.
Our Junior and Middle school captains participated in the Camperdown service. They laid MRC’s wreath to the Soldiers' Memorial and in the true spirit of community helped a 96-year-old Camperdown resident Grace with her wreath.
On 11 November, we also remember Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, who died on 11 November 1841. Catherine’s legacy lives on in our Catholic tradition guiding us through our daily learning and lives. Fittingly, we welcomed Deputy Principals of Mercy Education Limited and affiliated schools for their last day of professional development on Catherine's remembrance day. Thank you to Emmanuel College Warrnambool for co-hosting this great networking forum over the last three days.
Outdoor Education Bushwalking Camp
The Outdoor Education Bushwalking camp to Halls Gap started early Monday morning 7 November. On the first day, students walked from the town of Halls Gap to the Pinnacle, which was about 4km. At the Pinnacle a great view awaited us as it was a clear and sunny day. From the Pinnacle, we then walked to the Stony Creek Campground. By the end of the day, we had walked around 13km, most of this was uphill and very challenging, especially as some steps were quite large and steep. Downhill was surprisingly a challenge as well. We used muscles we never knew we had! At Stony Creek Campground, we set our tents up and were able to cook our dinner on the trangas and in the rec room available.
On Tuesday we were up bright and early at 6.30am to start cooking our breakfast and to get ready for the day's walk. We walked from Stony Creek Campground to Borough Huts. This walk was via the Rosa Peak lookout. Whilst the day was a little easier on our bodies, it was still tough as we were tired from the day before and a restless night’s sleep. We walked about 12 km that day. When we arrived at the campsite students set their tents up and ate lunch, afterwards they went for a swim in the creek that was near the campsite. Again, we had to cook dinner (that we had been carrying from Monday morning).
On Wednesday we packed up our tents again and drove into Halls Gap where we had a brought-in lunch, then we drove up to Turret Falls where we walked another 2.1km. After the Falls we finished the camp with a visit to the Halls Gap Zoo. The camp was challenging, to say the least, but we were able to use what we had learned and applied it to our Assessment task the following day.

Year 8 ‘Up the Creek’ Camp - Week 1
A mammoth effort was made by our Year 8 Week 1 ‘Up the Creek’ crew last week. Our students and staff conquered a 40km canoe paddle along the Glenelg River. This experience was part of their PEAK subject.
Our 8A & 8B were divided into two groups and camped at different campsites along the way. Canoeing for 5 days certainly tested the mettle of our students. They resiliently tackled drizzle, rain, long paddles, leeches, early mornings, setting up and packing up camp, cooking their own food, campfires, creativity, imagination, swimming, sunsets, sunrises and enjoying the fruits of the beautiful environment of the Glenelg River.
Beginning our journey at one end of the river, we emptied our bags into barrels and that's what we lived out of for the 5 days!! Our campsites along the river included Moleside, Pritchards, Skipworth springs, Pattersons canoe camp, and Lasletts.
Although sore and tired when we finished our canoe into South Australia, we know this was a unique experience for our students, that challenged many aspects throughout the 5 days.
We are extremely proud of the growth over the week and we hope by the photos we captured some of the incredible experiences that we had. Thank-you to our staff for providing this opportunity to the students.
Our 8C & 8D students will be on the same adventure this coming week. We wish them all the best creating some incredible memories.
Assistance with Noorat Show Set Up
Our Year 10, soon to be Year 11 VCE-VM, students lent a hand with show preparations on Friday. They worked wonderfully as a team to assist with a wide range of tasks. From making sure the chooks and cows were given comfortable bedding, to setting up marquees and stalls, they put all their energy into making the show a success. Everyone at the show was extremely thankful for the extra help and now the students have some additional work-related skills to add to their resumes!

St Vinnies Christmas Giving
A reminder to staff and students to bring along some money or a gift for the St Vinnies Christmas Giving. The gifts will be handed over to St Vinnies on the day of our Thanksgiving Mass next week.
Year 12 2023 Seminar Day
Our current Year 11 cohort had a lovely day together to begin their Year 12 RE program for 2023 with their first Seminar Day. It was a beautiful day of reflection and learning. We began the day with some Yoga/Pilates with guest facilitator Bree Harrison. After some team building activities it was time to walk up to the local Botanical gardens. While in the beautiful surroundings of the gardens, we spent some time on quiet contemplation, reflection and journaling.
After a BBQ lunch (with thanks to a group of Year 8 PEAK students and staff for cooking) we watched a clip on ‘Intuition, Power and Grace’. We also spent some time looking at and getting some feedback from the group in relation to the draft of the MRC College prayer. A big thanks to all students who participated respectively in all of the planned activities.
Uniform / Book Drive
The Social Justice group is looking for uniform or textbook donations, which we would love to repurpose and reuse. If there are any Year 12 students (and any students) who may have finished their time with MRC or have grown out of existing uniform - we would love for you to bring them in so that we can redirect these items to members of our community. If any families have any suitable uniform there will be a box at Reception for us to collect for redistribution.

Sports Report
Year 8 State Cricket
On Thursday 17 November, our Year 8 cricket team travelled to Geelong to play in the Quarter final against Maribyrnong College at East Park.
Eddie W. won the toss and chose to bat first.
Max H. and Campbell W. opened the innings for Mercy and after some tight bowling Max was dismissed for 4, Mercy were 1 for 8 after 3 overs. Eddie joined Campbell and the boys were able to rotate the strike with some quick singles. A couple of boundaries to Eddie helped the score tick along, Campbell went out for 4 and Mercy were 2 for 40 off 9 overs. Parker W. joined Eddie to continue to put on steady runs until Eddie was dismissed for a well compiled 31 and Mercy were 3 for 74 off 16 overs, Parker was out shortly after for 19 and Mercy were then 4 for 75 off 17 overs. With only 3 overs left the Mercy batsmen knew they had to swing at every ball which led to quick wickets with Albie C. out for 1, Charlie K. 10, Lenny S. 6, Ben W. 0, Cooper H. 1 and Sonny P. 2.
Mercy finished their 20 overs at 8 for 99. Considering the length of the grass this was a very competitive total.
The MRC team came out with enthusiasm knowing that 99 was a good total to try to defend. Eddie and Parker took the new ball and after some good tight bowling kept Maribyrnong to 0 for 13 after the first 5 overs. The boys were fielding well and were able to force the batsman to make a mistake and cause a great run out. Lenny was then given the ball and took a wicket in his first over which got the boys fired up, Cooper bowled 3 tight overs and took 2 wickets which gave the boys hope of winning. Another great run out and the boys looked on top with Maribyrnong struggling at 6 for 58 after 15 overs. But how quickly the game could change as one of the batsmen made a quick fire 33 to give his team some hope and they were then
7 for 93 after 19 overs, with only 6 runs to draw and 7 runs to win off the last over, both teams were feeling the pressure. Maribyrnong needed 3 runs off the last ball to win but could only manage 2 to draw the match. The wicket takers for Mercy were Cooper 2 for 6, Lenny 2 for 15, Sonny 1 for 13 and Albie 1 for 13.
After umpire deliberation it was decided that a super over was to be bowled by both sides. Maribyrnong faced their over first and made 5 runs and after Mercy’s over they also made 5 runs so the match was still drawn. The umpires then had another talk and decided the side who had hit the most sixes would win, unfortunately Maribyrnong had 3 sixes too Mercy 2 which awarded the match to them.
The Mercy boys can hold their heads very high as they played the game in great spirit and never gave up. We have some very talented players in our team, and they showed this today the way they batted, bowled, and fielded. Well done to coach Mr Cheeseman for keeping his nerves intact in such an exciting day's cricket and to Mr Delwig for this detailed report.
Clay Target Shooting Award
MRC’s Clay Target Shooting team were awarded an Australian Government Sport Achievement Award by Dan Tehan last Friday morning. A very exciting day for our shooters Toby, Angus, Matthew, Harrison and Harry (absent from photo).

The participants were honoured to receive their awards and to listen to the guest speaker - Camperdown's Clyde Sefton who represented Australia at international level in cycling and currently remains the only Australian to have won a medal in the road race at the Olympics, winning silver at the Munich games.

Lester Powling (Class of 2006) Speaks at Graduation Dinner
We were fortunate to welcome Lester Powling from the Class of 2006 as the guest speaker at our Graduation Dinner on Friday. In a most inspirational speech, Lester described his pathway from an MRC graduate to a successful Property Development Manager with Development Victoria.
Lester admitted that he wasn’t the best student at school. “I certainly didn't finish on top of the class. I left my graduation disappointed with my performance and lacked confidence in my academic ability. Nevertheless, I was motivated to move on, work hard and start my building apprenticeship, commencing the day after my final exam.”
Lester followed the advice given to him by his teachers Mr Lachie Lee and Mrs Mel Kavanagh - “if you don't get something at first, keep practising until you get it.”
After finishing his apprenticeship in Camperdown, Lester moved to Melbourne at the age of 22, where he worked in commercial construction for a few years. In 2012, he moved into a senior role, completed a diploma of construction management, and obtained his residential builder’s licence. At that stage he realised that he wanted to do more than just construction and he applied for a property degree at Deakin University. He was accepted even though he did not have the required ATAR. It was the experience he gained alongside his construction management diploma that helped him to get in.
At the end of his last year at Uni, Lester’s grades were in the top 5% and he was accepted for an internship as a property analyst in Shanghai, China, which was an incredible experience. When Lester graduated from university, he was offered a position as a project manager for Hallmarc Developments, a property developer managing 50 town houses in Point Cook. Following this, he worked in development consultancy before finally moving into his current role with Development Victoria and doing his Master of Business Administration at the University of Melbourne. “My most prominent project is ‘Luma’, 300 townhouses and a town centre in Sunshine, and I also manage an 80-lot land development in Ballarat.”
Lester reminded Year 12s that career pathways are rarely straight. His insightful message to the Class of 2022 was, “It doesn’t matter how you start or where you go after you leave today; you can take all kinds of avenues and going to university is not the only one. Everyone should go out and start connecting the dots. And start making decisions as often as they can, listen with an open mind, seek feedback, and work hard. The worst thing you can do is not make a decision and stagnate.”
We thank Lester for sharing his wonderful story with our Year 12 community.

Great Victorian Bike Ride - Possible Bus Delays
The Great Victorian Bike Ride will be passing through our area on Monday 28 & Tuesday 29 November. This event may cause slight delays with some of our bus routes. We are not expecting a great impact but ask bus travel families to keep this in mind.
