MRC Newsletter - Issue 16 - 25 October 2022
Prayer
We wish our Year 12 students all the very best as they begin their exam period and/or employment or training and prepare for life after Mercy Regional College.
Principal's Message
Last week we farewelled our Class of 2022. We celebrated in our Catholic and Mercy Regional College tradition with our Graduation Mass followed by our Year 12 Awards presentation. To gather together in person was something we have been denied as a community for the past two years, so to celebrate in this way in St Patrick’s Church, Camperdown was something for which we are most grateful. Fr Edward Moloney, graduating Class of 1981 was our celebrant in Fr Neville’s absence and many staff joined our Year 12 students and their families for a beautiful ceremony and blessing as these young people begin the next stage of their lives. We will remember this group of young people for their resilience, optimism, flexibility and independence as they completed much of their secondary schooling remotely. We wish for them prosperous and happy futures and look forward to learning of their future life pathways and welcoming them back as Alumni.
Many of our Year 12 and some Year 11 students commence their VCE Unit 4 exams this week with the English exam on Wednesday. Exams will continue across the next 3 weeks. We do wish them all the very best. We thank our Unit 4 teachers for their dedicated work in supporting our students. We will then join the Class of 2022 in their final celebration at the Graduation Dinner to be held on Friday 18 November. Year 12 students, families and staff will need to book their tickets via Trybooking.
For our Year 7 to 11 students we enter an important time of the year where learning is consolidated with assignments and exams. For our Year 11 and 10 students exams are not too far away. The term is also filled with many experiential learning opportunities including Year 7 and 8 Retreats, Year 9 students heading off to Melbourne for their city experience camp and our Year 8 students making the most of the State Government Positive Start free camp program with a 5-day Up the Creek canoeing experience on the Glenelg River. This is an inspiring journey-based program designed to ignite curiosity about the environment and empower students to connect with themselves and the world around them. Our students and staff will camp in tents and cook their own food over the 5 days. Let’s hope the weather is kind to them.
Our Clay Target Shooting team competed in Warrnambool yesterday and I wish our Junior Basketball teams the best of luck as they compete at the Greater Western Finals in Ballarat on Friday. Our Junior Cricket was rescheduled from today to Tuesday 8 November. Tomorrow, our Junior Debaters take on Geelong’s Matthew Flinders Secondary College in Round 2 of the DAV Junior Debating Program. I am most grateful to the staff who give their time so our young people can have these opportunities. Friday we celebrate World Teachers Day. The theme this year is “Hats off to Teachers”, recognising the great resilience our teachers have worked with during challenging times, all so they can give our Mercy Regional College students the best learning opportunities and futures possible. Thank you!
You may find in your letter box this week our new Mercy Regional College promotional flyer. With our 2022 College theme “Opening the Doors of Mercy” we wish that all families in regional communities feel welcome to join us.
I would like to take this opportunity to remember Fr William (Bill) Melican who passed away last week. Originally from a dairy farm in Wangoom, Fr Bill attended St Thomas’ in Terang and then St Patrick’s Ballarat. The St Patrick’s College website shared this tribute to Fr Bill :
Fr Bill was ordained by Archbishop Simonds in Ballarat on July 26, 1955. He served as assistant priest in the Parishes of Swan Hill, Linton, Colac, Ballarat East, Mortlake, Charlton, Mildura, as well as serving as Administrator in Charlton and Robinvale. Fr Bill has been Parish Priest in Hopetoun, Swan Hill, Camperdown, Stawell, Creswick and finally Robinvale where he retired from. Fr Bill celebrated the incredible milestone of 60 years of his ordination to the priesthood in 2015 with a special celebration with his church community and family. He was well known to many in the diocese after serving numerous parish communities throughout his life as a priest.
Finally, I do hope you enjoy the coming longer weekend. Our staff have a Professional Practice Day on Monday followed by the Melbourne Cup public holiday on Tuesday with school returning for all MRC students on Wednesday 2 November.
With kindness
Sharon Gillett
Principal
Learning at MRC
Term 4 is well underway and we are right at the pointy end of the year for our Year 12 students. Over the next month they will be engaged in revising for and sitting their VCE exams. Our Year 12 students and teachers are to be commended for the ways that they have worked together this year to maximise success for all students. While Year 12 teachers do tend to receive the praise at this time of year, it is important to recognise that all of the MRC teachers have played a role in the students’ journey over 6 years, they don’t suddenly land in Year 12 as fully formed learning machines! It has been the hard graft of many teachers over some tricky years (Years 8-10 I am looking at) that have brought them to this place - and of course, never underestimating the role of families and the first teachers of our young people. Congratulations to all and best wishes for the coming month (I won’t say good luck as luck rarely has much to do with it in my experience!). For the students in Years 7-11, the next 6 weeks are ‘full on’: assessments, tests, exams and camps. It is time for heads down and no nonsense. I would like to encourage all students and families to prioritise attendance over the coming weeks, illnesses will still occur but I cannot underestimate the fact that we are no longer in a remote learning space. Learning is very much happening within the context of the classroom and every single day counts.

Book Lists - VCE English & Literature Texts 2023
Please note that students going into Year 11 and 12 in 2023 and who are studying VCE English or Literature are required to purchase their texts by Sunday 6 November from Campion Books. These texts will be required when Unit 1-4 classes commence at the end of November. Please go to the Campion Website to order online using the code PG4Y. The full list of VCE English and Literature texts can be accessed here.
Junior Debating - Round 2
Mercy’s Junior Debators will go head to head on Wednesday 26 October with Geelong’s Matthew Flinders Secondary College in Round 2 of the DAV Junior Debating Program arguing the affirmative that ‘The Schools Spectacular is a waste of resources.’ Our novice speakers have been working hard crafting their arguments and becoming more familiar with their various speaking roles and the focus on argument rather than on facts and figures. Best of luck to all speakers and many thanks to their teammates who have helped to prepare for this event.
Oratory Competition 2022
Mercy's annual Oratory Competition will return as an in-person event on Thursday 10 November. The best speakers from the Junior and Middle Schools will battle it out for the Perpetual Shield in front of a panel of invited judges, and their peers. Participants have been notified by their English teachers. Further details will be shared in the coming week.
$20 Boss Business - 'Gravy Pot'
A group of our Year 10 $20 Boss students ventured on a cooking spree on Friday 14 October to make the most delicious hot chips with gravy. Needless to say, their 'Gravy Pot' business was a great success and made the rainy recess more cheerful for the happy customers. Well done to Myles S, Ben H, Ben M, Bohdie G and Rhys U for their efforts.
All profits made in the $20 Boss social enterprises will go to charity organizations. Stay tuned for more news of our student-run businesses.
VET Sport & Recreation Student-Run Activities
As part of their final Year 1 unit, our VET Sport & Recreation students planned and conducted some large group activities for Junior School last week. Year 7s and 8s were excited to participate in a basketball tournament, a European handball game and a round of boot ball.
It was a perfect opportunity for the VET students to put all their theory-based work into a practical setting. They masterfully used a variety of skills they learned throughout the year, including managing group dynamics, engaging participation, working in a team, and presenting to different age groups.
After completing the VET Sport & Recreation course next year, they will be qualified to work in a range of associated professions. What a brilliant opportunity for a school student!
Allied Health Assistance Excursion to Leef
On Thursday 13 October, our Year 1 Allied Health Assistance students ventured down to Warrnambool to attend a practical demonstration session at Leef Independent Living Centre. To support the study of their 'Assist with Movement' unit, they had the opportunity to see and test some lifting equipment that they may come across in the workplace.
The team at Leef were very knowledgeable and provided the students with skills they will require when working as Allied Health Assistants. Students were shown how to use equipment such as the Steady Sara, sit-to-stand lifting machine, portable lifting hoist and ceiling hoist. We thank the team at Leef, especially Lisa and Bec, for the great demonstration.
Indigenous Community Garden Update
Our VCAL Indigenous Memorial Garden Project is progressing well with each passing week. A few weeks ago Year 11 VCAL students took advantage of the glorious sunshine to clear the blocked drain and begin to level the land at the back of the garden. The first steps to helping stop the water that is pooling under the oak tree were successful and the water is now flowing freely into the drain.
In another mighty effort the students smashed out 6m of salt creek gravel on the garden paths which looked sparkly and new in the sunshine. We thank Stephanie from Parks Victoria and Corangamite Shire for their ongoing support and encouragement.
Year 11 VCAL and Hospitality Excursion
Year 11 VCAL and Hospitality students headed to Timboon on Monday 10 October to try the delicious Timboon Fine Ice Cream, look at the new extension of our Car Raffle sponsor Timboon Tiny Homes, soak up the beautiful weather and enjoy some quiet moments while walking the rail trail. Caroline and Tim Marwood were extremely generous with their time, sharing their business story with the students and answering their questions. A big thank you for hosting the group from MRC!
VCAL Students at Work
Apart from excursions, VCAL students have been putting their workplace skills to good use renovating an old area of the school with a fresh coat of paint. Great work!
Year 9 Computer Applications Excursion
Our Year 9 Computer Applications class spent the day experiencing the real-world applications of the computing work they have been doing this year. They saw a wide range of both soft and hardware in action and identified the constraints and considerations they will need for their own games. Students will now be using their skills and experiences to design their own more advanced 2D sidescroller game using Epic Games Unreal Engine (UE4) in collaboration with Ballarat Technical School.

Community & Wellbeing at MRC
Student Leaders Investiture 2023
Our College community gathered on the afternoon of 12 October to celebrate the investiture of our 2023 Student Leaders. Following a blessing, leaders' badges were presented to each of the students. Principal, Ms Gillett, then lit our cauldron and the 2022 leaders came forward to pass the light of leadership to our 2023 student leaders. We wish our student leadership team all the very best for the year ahead as they undertake their roles to support their peers and represent the College community.
Uniting Church Community Lunch
On Wednesday 12 October, a group of MRC Hospitality students served up the last Community Lunch in 2022. The local community enjoyed a delicious selection of cottage pie, devilled sausages and fried rice, chocolate pudding and apple sponge with ice cream.
Thanks to staff members Robyn Johnstone and Wendy Gleeson for preparing the meals and to Jordan, Oscar, Wil and Henry for helping on the day.
Year 9 Respect Cup
On Friday 21 October, Year 9 students from three local schools - Mercy Regional College, Emmanuel College Warrnambool and Trinity College Colac - gathered at Emmanuel College to compete for Respect Cup. Respect Cup celebrates the commitment to healthy and respectful relationships in our communities.
Year 9 students from each of the schools have been working on projects to tackle the issues they see as barriers to respectful relationships. Students pitched their ideas to peers, staff and a panel of judges who gave valuable feedback and ideas about how to bring their projects to life.
A tournament of mixed netball added an element of fun and competition to the day. We commend all students for participating in Respect Cup 2022 and congratulate Emmanuel College on retaining the cup this year.
Mental Health BBQ
We were fortunate last Wednesday to enjoy a warm and sunny day for our barbeque for Mental Health Awareness Month. Thank you to our wonderful volunteers who helped to cook - Troy & Mason, Natalie, Sharon Suhan, Janine Gallichan & Robyn Johnstone. It was wonderful to see a colourful array of odd socks as a visible way of showing that we are all different and unique.
Farewell to the Class of 2022
Last Week of School - Dress Ups
Our Year 12 students spent their last week of school participating in themed dress-ups to the great ammusement of staff and other students. It was great fun for the College community to try and guess their costumes.
Graduation Mass and Awards Ceremony
Monday 17 October was the culmination of a 13-year learning journey (and a 6-year journey at MRC) for our Year 12 students, completing their last official classes. Monday evening parents, friends and family came together with our graduating class to celebrate their Graduation Mass and Awards Ceremony. The night was a great success with Alumnus Fr Edward Moloney (Class of 1981) leading our students in their final Mass at MRC. The night was the first time in three years that we were able to celebrate as a school community, which made it a special and enjoyable evening for our Class of 2022, their families and friends.

Final Day - Activities and Assembly
Tuesday 18 October was the last official day on campus for the graduating class. Students and staff travelled to Warrnambool for the morning with some spirited games of ten pin bowling and lunch before returning for their final assembly and dismissal. It was a most enjoyable day even though the party's whistles and singing on the bus may have started to draw out a little.
The assembly gave the MRC community and Year 12s some time to look back at their journey at the College and to reflect on what has been a very different experience at times due to COVID. Having missed the Year 12 assembly over the past few years it was certainly a great experience for the whole school to come together and once again enjoy the final afternoon with Year 12s.
We wish our graduationg Class of 2022 all the very best for their upcoming exams and for whatever path their next journey takes them on.
Constellation Cup
An excited group of MRC students and staff travelled to Melbourne’s John Cain Arena last night to watch Australia's Diamonds play against New Zealand's Silver Ferns in the 2022 Constellation Cup. After losing the first two games in New Zealand, the Diamonds won convincingly 62-47, to the elation of our netball fans. What a special experience to watch the best of the best play live!
Faith at MRC
Year 7 Faith Day - 27 October
This term the Year 7 Faith Day will be completed in class groups in Week 4. On Thursday 27 October, each class group will visit the local Benedictine Abbey during their Religion classes. They will spend some time at the monastery, Church and on the grounds. The Faith Day links in with the unit that Year 7s are studying this term - ‘The Sign of the Cross’ - where students look at the concept of prayer life. This will also tie in with the ‘We are Called’ Religion unit that was studied in Term 3.
Uniform Drive
The Social Justice group is looking for uniform donations, which we would love to repurpose and reuse. If there are any Year 12 students (and any students) who may have finished their time with MRC or have grown out of existing uniform - we would love for you to bring them in so that we can redirect these items to members of our community. If any families have any suitable uniforms there will be a box at Reception for drop off.

Alumni News
James Lenehan (Class of 2010) Presents to MRC Students
We were excited to have our alumnus James Lenehan (Class of 2010) visit our STEAM classes last Monday to talk to students about his work in electronics. James told Year 8s about his fascinating career journey that includes finishing MRC as the College Dux, studying electrical engineering at University of Melbourne, working for a race timing equipment manufacturer and living in Germany for 18 months, returning to Melbourne and working as an engineer at Carlton & United Breweries, doing research at Analytik Jena and finally scoring employment with Outerspace Design as electronics engineer and product developer. James spoke passionately about the products his company has been working on, such as waterproof communication systems, wetsuit heat controllers, light features for LEGO and many more.
James taught Year 8s how to think outside the box when designing a new concept and shared some of the strategies he uses in his work as a product designer. It was wonderful to see James pass on his interest in electronics to the younger generation. He admitted that school students nowadays are extremely lucky to have a variety of hands-on classes where they can learn how to design and engineer. One piece of advice James would like to pass on to the students of today is that they should “pay more attention in Mathematics classes as they teach you a lot of skills that you’ll require in the future”.
We thank James for sharing his knowledge with Year 8s and for giving a career talk to our Year 11s later in the week.
If you would like to become a guest speaker in the classroom or at a College event, please contact Alumni Coordinator Katya Belokon at alumni@mercy.vic.edu.au. Our learning community would love to hear
your story.
