Prayer
An ANZAC prayer
Heavenly Father,
This ANZAC Day, we gather in remembrance and reflection. Grant us the wisdom to seek love in every interaction, to uphold justice in every decision, to extend forgiveness in every moment of hurt, and to pursue reconciliation in every relationship.
May the sacrifices of the brave men and women who served our nations be eternally honoured, and may their courage inspire us to build a world filled with Your peace. Bless us with the strength to forge bonds of unity, understanding, and compassion among all peoples.
As we stand together in solemn commemoration, may our actions reflect Your divine grace, guiding us to sow seeds of harmony and goodwill wherever we go.
Amen.
Principal's Message
As we embark on Term 2, I trust your Easter was filled with joy and reflection. For those who managed to steal some time away, I hope it was a rejuvenating break and quality time spent with family and friends. I was fortunate to spend a week travelling in Vietnam with my husband David. The weather was very hot and humid and the experience was wonderful! While I regretted missing out on our local Easter gatherings, I was blessed to partake in the solemnity of Good Friday Mass at the majestic St Joseph’s Cathedral in bustling Hanoi. Its architecture, reminiscent of the iconic Notre Dame de Paris, served as a powerful reminder of the timeless beauty and significance of the Easter season.
Thank you to all who contributed to our CARITAS Project Compassion fundraising efforts across Term 1. We support Project Compassion each year beginning on Ash Wednesday and concluding at the end of the term. The funds raised help to make a lasting change for those most in need for all future generations across the world. We proudly share that our Mercy community raised $1194 this year. Thank you to Director of Catholic Identity and Culture Mrs Mel Bourchier and MERCY teachers who supported our young people in their efforts this year.
We will gather to celebrate ANZAC Day on Thursday, with the details of the many local services shared on our social media/below.
We once again ask our young people who are planning on attending a local service to please wear their school uniform as a fitting tribute to those who have served our country and as proud representatives of our school and community. I thank those students and staff who are taking an active role in services. Former student Meg Lenehan (Class of 2016) has been invited to speak at the Terang service where she will reflect on her experience of visiting the WW1 battlefields of France and Belgium with our MRC Battlefields Experience 2015 as well as her experience walking the Kokoda trail in 2018 with her father Damian and brother Thomas (Class of 2012).
We are finalising numbers for our 2024 Battlefields Experience so please make contact with Senior Community Leader Berni Sinnott (bsinnott@mercy.vic.edu.au)
We are so pleased to have Deputy Principal Natalie Stephenson return in person last week, amidst her recovery from a broken vertebrae sustained in an accident early in Term 1. Natalie will be present on campus on Mondays and Tuesdays initially, gradually increasing her onsite presence throughout the term. Natalie teaches our VCE Unit ¾ Literature class.
Despite facing ongoing intensive treatment for breast cancer, both Kym Penry and Jude Murfitt demonstrate incredible courage as they continue their battle.
In solidarity, our senior students, led by Markey House Leader Myles S., will organise a "Shave for a Cure" event later this term to honour them. Please keep an eye out for ways to show your support.
I would also like to recognise the magnificent effort of former student Jake Rowbottom (Class of 2012) who cycled from Noosa to Camperdown in just over three weeks raising awareness and over $20K for prostate and Breast Cancer research.
Let us continue to keep staff member Christine Norton in our thoughts and prayers as she navigates through her illness and recovery.
We extend a warm welcome to our new staff who have joined us for Term 2. Mr Peter Liepins will teach Year 7 and 8 Humanities through until the end of Term 2. We also welcome back Ms Tia Stichcombe who will be taking some HPE classes also through until the end of Term 2.
I thank parents and students for their understanding and support in the midst of the many changes to the teachers taking classes between Terms 1 and 2. I know that despite the changes the learning continuity of our young people has retained its quality and remained consistent and I thank all MRC teachers for their dedication to ensuring this.
We hope to welcome senior English and Humanities teacher Ms Sarah Gilchrist from Wexford, Ireland and junior Music and Humanities teacher Ms Laura Flanagan from Texas, USA at the beginning of Term 3. We are currently working with them on obtaining their visa and their VIT registration.
We welcomed fathers, father figures and mentors of our Year 7, 8 and 9 students to our Time & Space evening last Wednesday. There are photos of this event in the Community & Wellbeing section.
Term 2 is 11 weeks in length this year and our College calendar illustrates the many and varied events and learning opportunities being provided for our young people. Our annual House Cross Country events are being held this week. Parent Teacher Student Interviews are scheduled for next week across Wednesday afternoon and evening (online) and during the day Thursday (both online and in person at McAuley campus). Thursday will be Student Free to enable our young people to attend and participate in learning conversations with their parents/carers and teachers.
Last week our Year 10 students participated in Work Experience. They explored a diverse range of professions from construction sites to radio stations to teaching to many professionals and trades. It was a week of rich learning filled with excitement and discovery as students gained insight into potential future pathways. Congratulations to our student and thank you to those in the community who hosted them and to families who ensured our young people could get to ‘work’. Thank you also to staff members Kellie Wilson, Margot Horan, Rose Henry, Ally Lourey who made it possible and to those who ensured our young people had a visit or a call from a familiar face to check in across the week, particularly Mrs Tania Bruckner. Some photos are later in the newsletter.
Last week saw our entry into the Ballarat Associated Schools (BAS) Sports. Our Senior Girls Netball played their first Division 1 Netball game having a convincing win over Ballarat High School. Their participation continued this week against last year’s champions Ballarat Grammar. Our girls played well against a very skilled and disciplined team. Despite our loss, it was a valuable learning experience and we look forward to our next match. Our Senior Boys Football team began their BAS participation yesterday also taking on Ballarat Grammar in the Division 2 Football. Mercy had a convincing and enjoyable win. Thank you to our coaches and team support people who are making this opportunity a reality for our young people - staff members Emily Stephens and Jordan Muller for netball, with umpiring covered by former student Tess Lourey and parent Wayne Robertson and staff members Darren Cheesman and Troy Stephens overseeing football.
We have many students and staff involved in Camperdown Theatre Company’s Freaky Friday which will be playing at the Camperdown Theatre Royal on this Friday and Saturday as well as next week also. We wish current students and staff Elli C., Jess M., Matéa M., Piper K., Madi L., Ava L., Annie R. and Toby M. (as well as many MRC alumni) all the best for the season. See the poster at the end of the newsletter for more.
We acknowledge the wonderful achievements of our young people in the community:
- Congratulations to Indi C. on receiving the Colac Women’s Basketball Best and Fairest Award!
- Well done to our Annabelle G. who played in the 2024 Victorian Diversity All-Stars matches during the holidays.
- Congratulations to Aiden C. who represented Victoria in the National Netball Championships in Brisbane on the term break. Aidan returned with a gold medal, he was also named most valuable player for the match and listed in the All Star Team as a goal attack.
- Well done Brodie H. who is the youngest person in Victoria to have completed full CFA training.
- Well done to Ava C. who topped the aggregate points table for Camperdown Cycling Club - a fantastic effort!
If you know a Mercy student doing great things in the community, please let us know at office@mercy.vic.edu.au so we can recognise their achievements!
Next week we celebrate Catholic Education Week – In the light of Christ. 150 years of the Ballarat Diocese is also being recognised. This is an opportunity for us to celebrate our Catholic identity.
Our new school kitten has arrived to help brighten our days! We have just held a competition to find a name for her, with the result pending.
Keep an eye out for an announcement soon!
VALE Kerin Glennen
The life of MRC former staff and community member, Deputy Principal and Interim Principal Kerin Glennen was celebrated by family and friends during the term break. Kerin commenced teaching in Catholic Education in 1983 and at MRC in 2000. He was Deputy Principal for 16 years. We continue to keep Kerin’s wife Karen and children Dan and Emily in our prayers. Dan is of course a well respected teacher and colleague at Mercy Regional College.
We also keep in our prayers staff member Allison Lourey, her husband Shane, and daughters Lily and Tess on the passing of Shane’s father David.
With kindness,
Sharon Gillett - Principal
Learning at MRC
It was wonderful to see the school come to life last week as our students returned from the term break.
It was however a little quieter than normal as Year 10’s spent last week on Work Experience. The work experience program offers students the opportunity to develop employability skills, explore possible career options, understand employer expectations and increase their self-understanding, maturity, independence and self confidence. Employers were raving about how wonderful our students are and I am sure future employment opportunities will result from the connections made. We must also offer our thanks to the dedicated group of staff members who worked tirelessly to ensure the Work Experience program ran successfully.
Parent-Teacher-Student interviews (PTSIs)
Parent-Teacher-Student Interviews provide a valuable opportunity for us to work together to support your child’s learning. The interview booking platform is now open on the Parent Access Module (PAM). If you are having difficulties navigating the system please give the school a call.
Next week there are two Parent-Teacher-Student Interview sessions. The Wednesday afternoon session will be conducted online. For those parents who prefer to meet face to face the Thursday session allows for either face to face or online interviews. Please note that the face to face interviews will take place at our McAuley campus in Camperdown.
Session 1
Date: Wednesday 1st May
Time: 4 to 7pm
Mode: Online
Session 2
Date: Thursday 2nd May
Time: 11.30am to 5pm
Mode: Online or face to face. (Note: face to face interviews will take place at the McAuley campus, Camperdown.)
The Online component of the interviews makes it imperative that everyone is on time for your interviews. If you are running late there is no guarantee that the teacher will be able to meet with you. A letter was sent to all families on Monday, please refer to that letter for more detail about the Parent-Teacher-Student Interviews.
Please reach out to me if you have any questions.
Leanne Delahunty - Director of Learning and Teaching
Middle School
Welcome back everyone!
We have had a great (busy) start to Term 2 with the Year 10 students participating in their Work Experience programme during the first week back. The feedback from students and employers has been really positive. Congratulations to the students for engaging with the programme, and hopefully everyone will come away from the experience with some greater insight into what they would like to do (or not do) in the future.
The Year 9 students have also come back to school with a positive energy ready to engage with their learning.
Term 2 will be a busy term as usual; starting next week with Parent Teacher Student Interviews over Wednesday afternoon and Thursday. Thursday will be a student free day, but we encourage students to be present for the parent teacher meetings. Please remember if your child has the same teacher for several subjects usually you will only need to make 1 appointment with that teacher. Also, there have been some teacher changes this term, and it will be up to you as parents to decide which of the two teachers you would like to meet with.
Finally, as football and netball season swings into gear we also ask that you help us support your student with frequent check-ins about their completed tests and assessments, their workload, and their upcoming tasks. I am always available should you have any questions or concerns.
Josiane Gardner - Learning Leader - Middle School
Animal Care Excursion
Our Year 1 and 2 Animal Care students visited the Dickson’s Farm in Dixie on Thursday 14 March. The excursion involved lots of hands-on practices. The year 1 students of the class focused on feeding and handling animals, where they got to take part in feeding and handling claves whilst the Year 2 students assisted in cleaning a large calf feeder. Students enjoyed their visit and learnt lots of new interesting skills to apply to their work and studies in the future. Many thanks to the Dicksons, for being very welcoming and allowing our Animal Care class to visit their farm and see how it operates!
Year 7 French
At the start of Term 2, students of 7B French tried on the new dress-ups in the French classroom when practising for their new assessment task: acting out the story in our textbook. In the story, Léo's naughty dog Hugo runs into the street which causes Nina to fall off her bike. Léo apologises for the behaviour of his dog and makes sure Nina is okay. Nina is new in town and Léo finds out that they are neighbours. The students act out all of this IN FRENCH! Oh, là là!
VCE Art Excursion
On Tuesday 23rd April our VCE Art and VCD students attended the Creative Arts Industry Day, at the Lighthouse Theatre in Warrnambool. This was a fantastic day full of creative passion from both industry professionals and learners. Students were able to explore a wide range of ways they can pursue a creative arts career. The talented panel of seasoned and successful artists were able to give them career advice and show/discuss their work.
Year 10 Work Experience
Last week our Year 10 students completed work experience. They explored a diverse range of professions from construction sites to gyms, healthcare, education, plumbing, teaching, hairdressing, and mechanics. It was a week filled with excitement and discovery, as students gained insights into potential future pathways.
Throughout the week, students immersed themselves in various industries, improving skills and gaining valuable experience beyond the classroom. Some found clarity in their career aspirations, while others discovered new interests and talents they hadn't previously considered.
It was also a great opportunity for our students to explore and envision their future paths. We look forward to seeing the impact of this experience as our students continue to grow and shine.
We are incredibly proud of our students' hard work and dedication, and we can't wait to see where these experiences take them in the future! A big thank you also to our families, workplaces, employers and MRC staff who have supported our students during this journey and contributed to the success of the program.
Community & Wellbeing at MRC
Welcome back to our Mercy community for an exciting Term 2! We've kicked off the term with some fantastic initiatives in our first two weeks.
In Week 1, we hosted our Time and Space evening, a special event dedicated to fostering meaningful and ongoing dialogue between parents/carers and young people, especially during the crucial adolescent years. This year, the focus was on fathers, father figures, and mentors. We were thrilled to have 70 attendees join us for this unique program, where fathers/father figures/mentors and the young people in their lives came together. The evening, facilitated by Bill Jennings and our staff, emphasised the importance of conversation. Participants were grouped into smaller workshops to share insights on challenges, rewards, qualities, and the value of connection.
A big thank you to all the young people and their father figures/mentors who participated in the evening. We hope it has strengthened your bond even further.
Mercy is excited to introduce School TV, a new wellbeing resource for families. This platform offers a wealth of relevant resources to support families facing challenges related to modern-day parenting.
To access this link, look for the icon (on the right) on our website.
We have many prevention and awareness days upcoming this term, and our wellbeing team have been busy working to bring these to life. We look forward to another term of growth, joy, challenges and triumphs.
A friendly reminder, we have a wellbeing team consisting of Sharon Suhan, Chadley Peerman, Harold Gara, Claire Walsh, Matthew Irving and myself. We are available in different capacities across the college and will continue to do our best in regards to wellbeing of our young people.

New Chicks Hatched
Robyn had a lovely surprise when checking the incubator over the holidays. We now have two Mercy chicks running around - Frankie and Billie.
ANZAC Biscuits
Our Senior VM students have been working on a project this week to commemorate ANZAC Day, handing out beautiful packages of ANZAC Biscuits to staff.
Students at the O’Keeffe campus also made ANZAC biscuits during the week during class as a way to remember those who serve our country.
Lest we forget
Sports Report
GWR Swimming
On 22nd March, Mercy students who qualified for the GWR Swimming Sports Competition started their morning on a bus to Horsham where the next round was being held. All students swam well in their events with some even qualifying to the next round! Congratulations to Harrison G. and Pippa B. who both qualified to the state level with Harrison winning the 15 year old Boys Freestyle and Pippa winning the 15 year old Girls Breaststroke and Backstroke. It was a fun day with a terrific effort from everyone who competed!
HSSSD Girls Footy
On Tuesday 23rd April MRC entered four teams in the HSSSD Girls Football and Boys Netball.
The Junior Girls Team only had one team to play so they played a full scale match against Camperdown College. They played an excellent team game and were able to win the match.
Our Intermediate Girls team played three matches and were very good going through undefeated. The windy conditions make it a little tricky, but the team moved the ball well to create numerous scoring opportunities.
These teams have now qualified for the GWR level in the coming weeks.
Thanks to Annabelle G. and Sophie C. for coaching the two football teams.
HSSSD Boys Netball
We had 9 students represent the Junior Boys Netball Team and 9 students represent the Intermediate Team.
Our Junior Boys team were very strong throughout the competition and qualified for the final against Terang College. They were able to win this contest comfortably, allowing them to qualify for the GWR level.
The Intermediate Boys were also able to make the final, this time against Cobden Technical School but were not able to overcome the extra height held by Cobden.
Well done to all participants and to their coaches Sophie Sumner and Zoe Williams.
BAS Football
The Mercy Regional College Senior Boys team began their BAS campaign against Ballarat Grammar with a solid win 6.9.45 to 2.7.19. The boys played a great brand of football and created plenty of opportunities throughout the game. Coach Wayne Robertson praised the players for their ability to play various positions and move the ball efficiently from defence to attack. Well done to the 22 players that represented the school and we look forward to our other upcoming matches.
Goal Kickers: Winton O. 2, Parker W. 1, Taj P. 1, Bohdie G. 1, Luke K. 1
Best Players: Bohdie G., Aidan C., Darcy V., Jacan B., Wilba C., Daniel R.
HSSSD Athletics
In the last week of Term 1 our HSSSD Athletics team competed against other regional schools in both track and field events. We had a number of amazing and consistent performances throughout the day and this gave our school a comfortable victory in the schools overall competition. Five MRC students were able to take out the age group champion medal, and these students are listed below. Well done.
The GWR stage does not take place until October, but we look forward to a large number of our students going to Ballarat to participate and try to get to the State level.

Faith at MRC
This week sees both the celebration of Passover for our Jewish brothers and sisters and Anzac Day. Passover, in Judaism, is a holiday commemorating the Hebrews' liberation from slavery in Egypt and the “passing over” of the forces of destruction, or the sparing of the firstborn of the Israelites, when the Lord “smote the land of Egypt” on the eve of the Exodus. Anzac Day remembers all Australian and New Zealand soldiers who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. The 25th of April was officially named Anzac Day in 1916. On the 25th of April 1915, Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula. These became known as Anzacs and the pride they took in that name continues to this day.
While different, both of these celebrations share connections through sacrifice, freedom and remembrance.
- Remembrance and Sacrifice: Both Passover and Anzac Day are occasions that involve remembrance and reflection on sacrifices made by individuals for the greater good. Passover commemorates the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt, while Anzac Day in Australia and New Zealand honours the members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who fought and died in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations.
- Community and Identity: Both occasions serve to strengthen community bonds and foster a sense of collective identity. Passover is typically celebrated with family and friends, retelling the story of the Exodus and affirming Jewish identity. Similarly, Anzac Day brings together communities to pay tribute to the servicemen and women who served their countries, fostering a sense of national identity and unity.
- Themes of Freedom and Liberation: Passover symbolises freedom from oppression and the journey towards liberation. Similarly, Anzac Day reflects on the freedoms and values defended by those who served in the armed forces. While the contexts differ, both observances highlight the importance of freedom and the ongoing struggle for justice and equality.
- Reflection and Tradition: Both Passover and Anzac Day involve traditional rituals and practices that encourage reflection on the past and its relevance to the present. Passover rituals such as the Seder meal and reading from the Haggadah provide opportunities for introspection and discussion. Similarly, Anzac Day ceremonies, including dawn services and marches, offer moments for contemplation and commemoration.
So, this week, while remembering those that have defended our country, also consider those who have a longer tradition of exile, tradition, and reflection who also defended our country in the great wars, and the contemplation and stirring history that they brought to that experience.
Project Compassion
Thank you to all students, families and staff for contributing to our Project Compassion fundraising last term. It was one of our most successful years. Caritas raises funds to contribute their work both locally and internationally. You can read on the Caritas website about three women that have been assisted through the Project Compassion work.
Our school raised $1194 in total with subtotals of $450 at McAuley and a massive $743 at O’Keeffe. Homeroom groups organised many types of fundraising, including: selling slushies, sweets, baked goods, milkshakes, frogs in ponds, zooper doopers. They also orchestrated competitions such as an Easter egg raffle and guess the lollies. Year 12s had a superhero dress up day to show their personal superpowers of empathy and compassion and other personal gifts. We also made whole school efforts on Pancake Tuesday with pancakes available to all students.
What a wonderful show of enthusiasm by all that demonstrates our willingness to work as a community to support others.
