MRC Newsletter - Issue 9 - 14 June 2023
Prayer
Dear God,
As we gather in this time of assessments and exams, we humbly come before You, seeking Your guidance, strength, and peace. We recognise that these moments of evaluation can bring forth feelings of anxiety, stress, and uncertainty. But we also know that through You, all things are possible.
Grant us, dear Lord, the wisdom to understand the subjects we have studied and the ability to recall what we have learned. Help us to approach our assessments with a clear mind and a calm spirit, knowing that You are with us every step of the way.
During moments of doubt or fear, remind us of Your promises of strength and encouragement. Fill our hearts with confidence, knowing that we are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed. Grant us the focus to stay attentive, the clarity to comprehend, and the creativity to express ourselves effectively.
Lord, we pray for our teachers who guide us through this journey. Bless them with patience and understanding as they assess our efforts and provide us with valuable feedback. Grant them the wisdom to inspire and motivate us, helping us to realise our full potential.
Above all, may this time of assessment not define our worth or identity. Remind us that our value lies not in our grades alone, but in the unique gifts and talents You have bestowed upon us. Help us to remember that success is measured not only by numbers on a page but also by the growth we experience along the way.
Amen.
Principal's Message
Welcome to our final newsletter for Term 2. What a term it has been!
Over the past few weeks there has been a continuing emphasis on finishing tasks that showcase the knowledge and skills students have gained throughout the semester. This important stage of learning allows our students to exhibit their progress across various learning domains, and we extend our gratitude to parents for their continuous support. Last week we had the opportunity to experience the entrepreneurial and project based learning of our $20 Boss students, under the guidance of teacher Tania Bruckner, as they shared their wares on Market Day. An amazing selection of self driven project outcomes to choose from. Tomorrow, Thursday June 15, teachers will have a dedicated Professional Practice Day for correction and the reviewing and writing reports. These reports will be accessible on PAM at the end of the term. This is also the day many of our senior students will sit their most important GAT.
On Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 June our staff will participate in the Voting period for the proposed Catholic Education Multi Enterprise Agreement 2022 (CEMEA 2022). This new agreement has at its focus, improved working conditions for teachers and all staff who work in schools. The proposed changes have already included pay rises, classification changes for education support staff, reduced face to face teaching time for teachers and a change to the way teacher work is regulated. Part of this regulation is recognition through the accrual of Time in Lieu for the time teachers and education support staff are required to work outside of agreed working hours at camps, excursions and school events. Without teacher and staff involvement in and supervision of such activities they cannot occur. We are grateful for their generosity of time as these are important parts of learning in our school.
We enhanced our focus on involving our Junior students in the Performing Arts, as our Year 7 students played a significant role in the Junklandia performance in Colac. This captivating show featured a blend of rhythm, dance, circus acts, and comedy, captivating the audience's imagination through the innovative use of recycled materials as musical instruments. Everyday items like kitchen utensils, cardboard boxes, and buckets were transformed into drum sets, while plastic bags were repurposed into remarkable musical tools. The performers utilised the human body as a unique sound machine. The grand finale showcased an incredible "junk orchestra," where each audience member, armed with a recycled instrument, came together to form a truly unique Junkyard Band. Through synchronised rhythm, music, and movement, the audience experienced the tangible power of collaboration and teamwork while enjoying themselves!
Our Addams Family cast and crew continue their commitment to bringing to you a skilled and entertaining performance. Save the date for our public shows to be performed at the Theatre Royal Camperdown, commencing with an evening performance on Friday 18 August followed by a matinee and evening show on Saturday 19 August. Tickets for the show will go on sale soon. It won’t disappoint!
In sport news we congratulate students involved in the many MRC teams to participate in HSSSD local competitions as well as Greater Western Region finals competitions. Both our Year 9 Boys Football team and our Year 7 and Year 8 Girls Netball teams won through their HSSSD round to now qualify for GWR finals. Our Junior Girls Football team had a great day out without making it through to GWR finals, whilst our Senior and Intermediate Girls both played in the Grand Final at GWR. Our Senior team lost by 2 goals to Trinity College Colac and our Intermediates by 4 goals to Emmanuel College Warrnambool. Our Year 10 Boys Football team played on the same day also losing in the Grand Final this time to Monivae College, Hamilton.
Congratulations go to Archie T Year 10 on his selection in the Victorian Country U16 Football Squad. We wish Archie and his team all the best for their competition in July.
Tyra S has also been included in the Victorian Interschools Equestrian team in the show horse section for juniors competing alongside Lizzy J in the senior section.
We also congratulate the many girls who played in the recent Western Division of the Netball Victoria Association Championships in Warrnambool with many now qualifying to represent the Hampden League in the finals on Sunday 18 June at the State Netball Centre in Parkville.
Well done also to 2021 Alumni Hamish Sinnott on his selection in the Carlton VFL side which defeated Essendon on Sunday.
We congratulate our Senior and Intermediate debating teams who participated in the second round of the DAV Debating competition in Ballarat. Our Year 10 students participated in their Religious Education Retreat Program last week. A little different to previous years, the extended experience was part of the Positive Start Camp and Experience Program funded by the Victorian Government to enable young people to be more active and reconnect with friends after our remote learning experience.
With the term break just a few weeks away we take this time to thank and farewell staff who have been working with us whilst others have been taking well earned leave. We thank sincerely Lola Dussart, our volunteer French Language Assistant who will return home to Belgium on 21 June. We sincerely thank the van den Heuvel family of St Colmans Mortlake who have hosted Lola for her stay. We thank and farewell teacher Mary Renehan who has been covering Lesa Thornton this term. We welcome Lesa back at the beginning of Term 3.
Beginning at the start of Term 3, we wish LSO Zoe Bouchier all the very best as she begins parental leave to welcome her second child. We also wish College Counsellor Sharon Suhan the best as she and her family take some well earned leave. We are pleased to welcome back former MRC College Social Worker Chadley Peerman whilst Sharon is away. We also welcome back to MRC teacher Kristie Jensen from Parental Leave.
We will soon be advertising for expressions of interest for teaching staff for 2024, including graduates. Please share what a great school and community MRC is with any interested teachers and potential education support staff.
Our ongoing open enrolment process for 2024 is still in progress. I trust that you have received our enrolment flyer via mail. We will host tours at our O’Keeffe Junior campus in Noorat on Wednesday 14 June at 9.30am and 3.30pm and on Monday 19 June at 6.30pm. Our Discovery day will be hosted on Monday 28 August for all confirmed and prospective 2024 Year 7 students. Families interested in enrolling their students for Year 7 in 2024 or any other year level are requested to initiate the completion of their enrolment paperwork at the earliest convenience. The necessary documentation can be accessed online, along with the applications for our Equity and First Nations scholarships. An education at Mercy is accessible to everyone. Furthermore, I want to extend a heartfelt invitation to any families currently facing challenges. If you find yourself in need, please don't hesitate to reach out, and we will gladly arrange assistance with family fee contributions. We are here to support you.
Our final day for students this term is Friday 23 June with an early finish for students to allow our buses to connect with State bus runs. This day will be a Winter Woolies - Flanno Friday casual dress day and we ask all students and staff to bring along goods needed by Warrnambool and District Food Share - healthy cereals and breakfast spreads - and non perishable food and toiletry items for St Vincent de Paul.
Thank you for your kindness and generosity,
Sharon Gillett

Year 10 to Senior School Pathways - SAVE THE DATE!
Behind the scenes our staff are working hard preparing for the upcoming period when our students select their pathways and subjects for 2024. This is relevant for students in Year 8 and 9, but is most critical for our Year 10 cohort who will be entering their senior years of schooling. Some families may be aware that much has changed in the senior schooling landscape over the last 12 months and that young people now have several pathway options available to them with some of these pathways overlapping. It is vital that all of our families have an opportunity to listen to what has changed from the experts in person.
What has changed. From 2024 all senior students will be working towards achieving the VCE certificate. VCAL has been phased out. For students wishing to pursue a vocational pathway, they have the option of taking the VCE Vocational Major (VCE-VM) stream that can be integrated with both VET and traditional VCE studies. It may sound confusing which is why we need all families to engage with our process.
On Friday 14 July we will have the official ‘launch’ of the pathways period which will take place over the course of the term. In the morning our Year 10s will hear from staff with leadership oversight in VCE, VCE-VM, VET, School Based Apprenticeships (SBATS) and Work Placements. Students will be given a Pathways booklet where they will reflect on their educational journey to date, take notes on what they learn from the various information sessions and plan their options. Parents will have various opportunities to engage with the process as it unfolds and the most important date is the:
There is an English excursion planned for this day for all Year 10 students in Melbourne. Students will be returning late to school so we have organised the session to run adjacent to the pick up time.

$20 Boss Market Day
On 1st June our Year 10 small business class ran their $20 Boss Market Day during lunchtime at McAuley Campus. This was a culmination of many weeks' work, where students explored ideas, narrowed their focus and learned how to create an enterprise.
Their project based learning focussed on planning, budgeting, marketing and troubleshooting. The students have worked very hard, and should be proud of themselves - their market was a huge success. The businesses were ice-cream sandwiches (Archie & Darcy), bath bombs (Lucy, Annie & Hannah), milkshakes (Keely, Phoebe, Indi & Lucy), choc-chip cookies (Alex, Charlie, Billy, Jach & Elijah) and baked goods (Trent).
Thank you to all the staff and students who supported the $20 Boss class. All profits will be donated to the charities of the students’ choice - the Breast Cancer Foundation, Fight MND, Make-A-Wish, Lifeline and Mates4Mates.
Debating and Public Speaking at Mercy
Our two debating teams made the trip to Ballarat again last Wednesday to compete in the Debaters Association of Victoria Competition.
Our C Grade Team last week consisted of three amazing Year 9 students:
-Carl L
-Maddison S
-Joseph M (best score for our team)
The team was faced with an ‘advised topic’ regarding technology and innovation. They were given the exact topic one hour before the debate and required to plan it without any technology or resources other than some pre prepared notes on the broader topic.
The topic was: That companies should be required to produce a new product or offer a new service every year. (Affirmative)
As a teacher, the highlight for me was seeing the students plan the debate (through the windows as I was not allowed to help). They had a classroom and a white board and notes to use. The students worked so well as a team. They planned, brainstormed, discussed and problem solved together for an hour (which flew by!).
Competing against a Year 10 team from Ballarat Grammar they acquitted themselves well and although they were not the final victors their arguments were clear and strong.
The Year 11 VCE team were faced once again with a Year 12 team from Ballarat Grammar.
-Charlotte B (equal best score for our team)
-Valeria M (equal best score for our team)
-Jack M
We were the negative team debating the topic: That the government should financially incentivise people to become vegetarians.
As an entirely ‘secret ’ debate the students were given the topic just one hour prior and required to go into a room to prepare and plan their arguments and possible rebuttals. (With no technological support or notes). This style of debate is very challenging and requires a lot of skill and teamwork especially as they are expected to speak for at least 6 minutes each. Whilst not the victors, I would like to congratulate our VCE debaters on being brave, intelligent, hardworking and determined competitors in such a high level competition. Thanks also to the staff who have given up their time to accompany the team and support the students thus far.
Up and coming events include:
Round four of Ballarat region DAV debates (secret topics) in Ballarat on July 19th
Warrnambool Eisteddfod Year 9/10 Debate competition on July 26th
Warrnambool Eisteddfod year 11/12 Debate competition on July 27th
Final Round of Ballarat Region DAV debates on August 2nd.
Frayne Speech Festival on August 25th Senior Teams only. This competition between Mercy Affiliated Schools round Victoria includes Debating, Public Speaking and Voice Choir.
Animal Care Excursion
On the 1st of June, our Cert II Animal Care class had an excursion to the Warrnambool Wildlife Encounters park (WWE). WWE offered a complete hands-on interaction with all the native animals in the park. During their visit, the students patted, held and fed the majority of animals they had on show. They met animals such as wombats, kangaroos, raptors, dingoes, and reptiles just to name a few. Students were also provided with lots of interesting facts about each animal. The WWE provides amazing hands-on experiences that not many other wildlife parks offer. Our Animal Care class highly recommends you visit!
VCE PE Excursion
Our VCE PE class visited the state of the art exercise science lab at Fed uni on Thursday 8th June. The students participated in labs on biomechanics and energy systems and experienced first hand the processes and testing done by elite athletes. A great experience!

Year 10 Retreat - Wednesday 7th - Friday 9th of June
Year 10 Retreat at Burnside Camp in Anglesea was a remarkable experience. This transformative event allowed our students to step outside their comfort zones, embrace new challenges, and gain valuable insights that will shape their personal and academic journeys.
The retreat involved a good blend of outdoor activities and inspiring guest speakers. Our students pushed their limits through engaging in activities that were outside their comfort zones. The adventures included bike riding, low-ropes and initiatives, high ropes, and stand-up paddle boarding. These experiences not only tested their physical abilities but also instilled a sense of resilience and teamwork within each participant.
In addition to the adrenaline-pumping activities, our students had the privilege of listening to two interesting guest speakers. Nas Sobhani, from the streets barber, shared his inspiring journey and highlighted the importance of doing good in the world while developing virtuous characteristics. His message resonated deeply, encouraging our students to make positive contributions to their communities and embody compassion, kindness and empathy.
Another esteemed speaker, Sonya Karras from 'a whole new world,' addressed the critical topic of personal safety. Through engaging stories and meaningful discussions, she imparted invaluable knowledge to our young people, equipping them with practical skills to navigate their surroundings confidently and stay safe.
Amidst the captivating sessions and physical challenges, our students took time to appreciate the stunning Anglesea coastline during a refreshing walk. Despite a little rain, their spirits remained undeterred, and the beauty of the surroundings provided a serene backdrop for reflection and connection.
The retreat also incorporated team-building games, fostering cooperation and camaraderie among our students. These activities reinforced the importance of effective communication, trust, and unity when working together towards a common goal.
Furthermore, our students were guided through goal-setting activities and had the opportunity to create vision boards. These exercises empowered them to identify their aspirations, clarify their objectives, and develop a roadmap for personal growth and achievement.
As we reflect on this Retreat, we are filled with pride for our Year 10 students. Their willingness to step outside their comfort zones, embrace challenges, and actively engage in personal development is inspiring. We believe this experience has equipped them with valuable skills, resilience, and a sense of purpose that will propel them forward in their academic and personal pursuits.

Year 9 Retreat - Wednesday 21st June 2023
What does MERCY look like, feel like and sound like to you?
Our Year 9s will share in a great ‘Mercy’ themed retreat on Wednesday 21st of June.
This is a compulsory school day and part of the RE curriculum.
The guest speaker for the day is Karon Donnellon RSM.
Karon has had years of experience speaking with students and adults alike of the story of Mercy and how this ethos can be enacted in our world today. She is an engaging and inspiring speaker who will link our school values to the theme of ‘mercy’. This theme embodies our hope that students at Mercy Regional College really do see themselves as people of mercy, both now and into the future with a focus on giving back to the community in any way they can. This topic relates to the “Mercy” unit which has been explored in RE classes throughout Term 2.
The day will be broken up into several parts including shared morning tea and shared lunch together as a Year 9 community.
There will be activities that promote a sense of ‘giving’ to the wider community and which follow on with the theme of mercy and compassion in today's society. We will focus on giving with the whole school Winter Appeal and will be especially asking Year 9 students to be conscious of donating for this appeal and for the needs of Mercy Works. https://www.mercyworks.org.au/
There will also be the opportunity for students to respond artistically and practically to the theme during the day including sorting goods for charity, making projects for charity and presenting artistic pieces to improve awareness of the needy within our school community.
We look forward to a special day in our school community and the involvement of all Year 9 students. We will use three venues for different aspects of our day including St Patrick’s Church, MID01 & MID02 and the multipurpose area at McAuley Campus.
Jo Saunders & Josiane Gardner - Year 9 RE faculty.

GWR Netball
On Tuesday, 6th June our Senior and Intermediate Netball teams competed in the GWR competition in Ballarat.
The Senior team played very well throughout the day winning their two pool games against Warrnambool College and Horsham College. The team was strong in the semi final against Ballarat Secondary College, with MRC winning 35-14. The team came runners up in the grand final against Trinity College Colac. It was a great game, with a final score of 23-25.
The Intermediate team competed in their pool against Ballarat High and Edenhope Secondary College, emerging victorious in both games with convincing performances. In the first semi-final, they engaged in a closely contested match against Trinity College Colac, eventually securing a victory by a margin of 3 goals. The grand final showcased an intense showdown against Emmanuel College, Warrnambool. Although the scores were tied at half time, the team unfortunately fell short by 4 goals at the final siren.
It is worth noting that all the players displayed true sportsmanship throughout the competition, and they deserve congratulations for their commendable efforts!

Limberlost, by award-winning author Robbie Arnott, is an especially great read for anyone who enjoys descriptive writing. The story is set in the author’s home state of Tasmania and is loosely based on the stories Arnott’s grandfather told and retold of growing up in the Tamar Valley. Arnott excels at making the landscape come alive with his writing.
